Contract Jackpot
Corrales information technology company and partner firms land huge government deal
BY RORY MCCLANNAHAN Journal Staff Writer
It's about 960 miles from Alexandria, La., to Corrales. And although Clarence Culbert now lives and runs his Global Technology Solutions in Corrales, he is never far from his first hometown.
It was growing up there that contributed to the man he is now, he says. A 28-year Army career contributed a bit, too, he adds.
I wouldn't have accomplished all that I have without the support of my family, Culbert said.
Some of those accomplishments include obtaining the rank of colonel in the Army, working in the Pentagon and working as a system engineer for both Lockheed Martin and Intel.
Culbert started Global Technology Solutions about a year ago. The company provides information technology services. He said he retired from the Army in November 2005. He had served on both active and reserve duty in the Army over 28 years.
Not bad for the son of a custodian. Culbert credits his father, who raised nine children by himself, for pushing him to learn.
Dad pushed us to educate ourselves, Culbert said.
Culbert took the message to heart, earning several college degrees and learning all he could in his field.
Global Technology Solutions puts to use educational and practical skills Culbert has cultivated over the years. Plus it doesn't hurt that Culbert has been making connections for years as well.
That knowledge paid off recently when Global Technology Solutions and several other companies partnering with Carolina Management and Technology Inc. of North Carolina were awarded a $5 billion information services technology contract with the U.S. government's General Services Administration.
Culbert will provide services including configuration management, enterprise architecture, project management, information operations, computer security, network operations and strategic planning.
Global Technology Solutions essentially makes sure that computer generated information is handled efficiently and securely.
The company is one of several working on the GSA contract, Culbert said.
I'm one of the team contractors on the contract, he said. It means a lot for my small company and others around the country.
Carolina Management estimates the contract will bring about $75 million in business to its company and its partners.
Culbert said that he is looking forward to getting to work.
Culbert said most of what he does for his clients is either done online or at the client's location. That makes it possible for him to do a lot of work from his home office in Corrales.
Culbert said he and his wife, Jane Powdrell-Culbert, built the house in 1998. The couple had lived on the East Coast for 15 years, but Culbert said there was no question about moving to New Mexico. Not only is his wife from the area, but the state offers a slower pace, he said.
It's just better to be here, Culbert said.
